The Emergence of Bismuth Yellow: A Safer Alternative
In recent years, the introduction of Bismuth Yellow sparked excitement, offering a potential safer alternative to Cadmiums, which faced suspicion regarding their carcinogenic properties. Beyond safety concerns, Bismuth Yellow presents an additional advantage—opacity, akin to the Cadmiums. This cool, light yellow bears a striking resemblance to Cadmium Yellow Light, serving artists in a similar capacity.
Lightfastness Triumph: Bismuth Yellow vs. Cadmium Yellow
One noteworthy advantage of Bismuth Yellow lies in its superior lightfastness compared to its Cadmium counterpart. Cadmium Yellow, inherently warm, employs a co-precipitation process with zinc sulphide to achieve a cool primrose colour. However, this zinc component compromises lightfastness, a drawback mitigated by Bismuth Yellow. With lightfastness equal to or surpassing pure Cadmium Yellow and outshining Cadmium Yellow Light, Bismuth Yellow emerges as a beacon of permanence in the artist's palette.
Cool Versatility: The Artist's Colour Mixer
While the allure of golden yellows remains, it's the cooler, lighter yellows that prove most useful to artists. While warmer yellows excel in creating oranges, cooler yellows take the lead in producing greens—a crucial aspect given the prevalence of green in artistic representations of the natural world. If compelled to select a single vibrant yellow for the palette, Bismuth Yellow would be my choice, owing to its opacity, permanence, and versatility as a colour mixer.
